MRI Newsletter
May 2006
From The Editors

Robert (Rob) Junk's photoMay is this year's official kick-off of our annual presentation schedule. This coming weekend we will be in Seattle, speaking at the annual meeting of the ISMRM / SMRT. This presentation, "MRI Facility Safety," is being made possible by the sponsorship of Lindgren RF Enclosures and Kopp Development. Our heartfelt thanks to both of them.

For those of you who aren't able to join us in Seattle, we have two other confirmed presentations scheduled for later this year. Information and links to all three presentations are below under "News Bite."

MRI Suite Design Book CoverBut if you're in the mood for more than an hour of MRI suite safety and design advice, mark your calendars for late this summer when our new book, the "Handbook on MRI Suite Design" will be available. Keep your eyes open for previews of the book which should come out in July. If you want to be notified about the release of the book and the opportunities to preview sections of it, please click here.

And although the May issue of the MRI Newsletter usually has the feature articles restricted to subscribers only, we invite everyone to read our 'Call To Action For MRI Safety' feature at the top of the next column.

As always, we hope that you will contact us if you have any questions about anything you read in the newsletter, or if we can be of any assistance to you.

Call To Action For MRI Safety:
Help Us Make MRI-Safety Week A Reality!
By Robert Junk, AIA, AHRA and Tobias Gilk

Join the MRI Newsletter in promoting a grassroots "MRI-Safety Week" for the week of July 23rd to July 29th this year. To our knowledge, there has been no similar recognition and we felt that this year, in particular, deserved to have a focus on patient and staff safety in the MRI environment. Why that week in July? Why this year in particular?

On July 27th, 2001, a young boy died in a tragic MRI accident in New York when a portable oxygen cylinder was brought into the magnet room while he was still inside the bore. The magnet attracted the cylinder which struck and killed the boy. This accident became the touchstone for MR safety and this year marks the 5-year anniversary of the event.

Selecting A Site For Your Next MRI Suite:
It Pays To Plan Ahead.
By Tobias Gilk

Nearly every hospital with more than a couple dozen beds and every outpatient imaging center have a similar question looming over their head… Where will the next MRI go? For the many who have only just recently installed an MRI, it may seem incomprehensible to contemplate a new scanner, years in the future, but it is precisely now that facilities need to begin planning.

Why the push to plan ahead? Because subsequent replacements or expansions may be vastly simplified, projects may be accelerated by months, and hundreds of thousands of dollars may be shaved from project budgets, if you follow these recommendations...

Magnet Room Equipment And Furnishings:
The Ultimate Caveat Emptor.
By Tobias Gilk

Everyone who reads articles, like this one, which deal with MRI suites learned long ago that iron-containing, or ferromagnetic, materials present significant hazards to patients and staff. Thankfully, there are tools, appliances, furnishings and clinical devices that have been designed to function safely in the MRI suite. In many regards, clinical equipment safe in the MRI suite is easier to find and purchase than many of the myriad of non-clinical furnishings and appliances, such as furniture and fixtures, that are needed in the suite.
