MRI-Safety Week Follow-Up:
Same Time Next Year?

By Robert Junk, AIA, AHRA and Tobias Gilk

Unfortunately, we didn’t hear from anyone in Antarctica. If we had, MRI-Safety Week would have covered all seven continents! There were people from all over the globe who visited the MRI-Safety Week website and implemented suggested tools to celebrate and enhance safety at their facilities. So what did we learn (besides the fact that the Antarctica MRI community is bitterly antisocial) and what else is in store?

As with any event with no precedent, it seemed that many enthusiastic people from around the world discovered the event and our website later than they would have liked to prepare. While we were actively working to serve as a clearinghouse to exchange the best ideas and resources, there were many requests that simply couldn’t be met in the time available. The take-away message: there is an intense hunger for information on how to promote and improve safety in MRI facilities.

While we had no grand plans for making MRI-Safety Week an annual event, it has become clear to us that there is both a need and a desire to share our stories, our resources and our support throughout the professional community. As such we’re proud to announce that we will be supporting MRI-Safety Week as an annual event!

But in order to do this, we want to get your feedback so that we can provide those resources that are most useful. We’ve received requests for standardized promotional posters and table-tents, quiz-show formatted questions on MRI safety, informational fliers and signs, and others. If there are tools that would have enhanced your participation in MRI-Safety Week, what are they? If you have resources that were particularly helpful, would you be willing to share them with others? Was your focus on educating those outside the MRI department or on internal evaluations of safety provisions at your site?

We invite your input to help celebrate and enhance the safety of patients and staff in MRI facilities. Your input and participation made this inaugural MRI-Safety Week a global success and will assure that subsequent years are even more effective.

Thank you for your support. We look forward to hearing from you.
