MRI Newsletter
September 2006
From The Editors

Robert (Rob) Junk photoWow! Just last week we received the audience feedback from our presentations at the AHRA annual meeting. We felt great immediately after the presentations, though when the review scores came last week, those feelings washed over us again. Converted to percentages, each our presentations received ratings of over 95%!

I've already begun working to convince my presentation partner, Toby Gilk, that his interpretive dance of a magnet quench would be enough to get us to the magic 100%. As good as any of our presentations may have been, we're always working to make them more informative and engaging than the last.

If you have not yet had a chance to attend one of our presentations, we invite you to see what you've been missing by joining us at the RBMA fall meeting in October in Phoenix. Details of our two RBMA presentations are available below under the 'News Bite' heading.

You may have noticed slight differences in the appearance of the MRI Newsletter in the last few months. As I first shared with you in July, we've begun using an email service to help us get the newsletter to you more effectively and efficiently. This is going to enable us to better respond to your wants and needs in terms of what is in the newsletter and how it reaches you.

We need your help with one part of this new system. We are working to keep subscription information as up-to-date as possible for you. This helps assure that your copy of the newsletter has the content you're looking for and reaches you promptly. If you haven't already done so, please take just a minute to click on the "Update Profile/Email Address" link at the foot of this email to verify your name, address, and email for us.

As allways, we hope that you will contact us if you have any questions about anything you read in the newsletter, or if we can be of any assistance to you.

Converting To The New 'MR Safe':
Improve Safety In One Day.

By Robert Junk, AIA, AHRA and Tobias Gilk

Don’t you love it when pop culture re-writes our vocabulary? Ten years ago “fly” meant being airborne. Today it means “stunning”, or “cool” (assuming “cool” still means what it did ten years ago). But if you misuse “fly” today, you’re only likely to get a snide look from the hipper-than-thou class or ridiculed by your children. We only wish that the consequences were similarly inconsequential with regard to the recent vocabulary re-write undertaken by the ASTM and the FDA.

Could Your Quench Pipe Kill Your Magnet?

By Tobias Gilk

Last year we all watched in 24-hour-newschannel-fascination a hurricane-force winds and rain lashed the Gulf Coast. Despite the fact that we love to visit in calmer weather, those of us who don’t live near the coast between Texas and South Carolina count ourselves lucky when The Weather Channel begins 24-hour coverage of the latest named storm. Apart from the risks to homes, friends and family, there was no shortage of stories last year from MRI equipment damaged or destroyed by the hurricanes and their domino-effects on healthcare providers.

Does that mean that those of us without a beachfront view are safe from inclement weather damaging MRI equipment? No! In fact one of the most common quench pipe installations details in place across the country may turn a power-failure or intentional quench into a catastrophic failure, destroying your MR and jeopardizing patients and staff.

Patient Safety And Quality Improvement Act:
One Year Later.

By Tobias Gilk

Just over a year ago the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act (PSQIA) was signed into law.  The act is designed to, among other things, enhance the quality of care by creating liability-free mechanisms for reporting accidents and near misses. The working theory is that many repeat accidents could be avoided if the causes and contributing factors for accidents were identified and disseminated to other providers.

Thirteen months after the law went into effect, are we seeing changes in MRI accident reporting? Perhaps a little…
