MRI Newsletter
October 2006
From The Editors

Tobias (Toby) Gilk's photoWill we see you in Phoenix? Will you be with us at the RBMA fall meeting for our presentations on "Ten Things Your Equipment Vendor Won't Tell You (Until After You've Signed The Agreement)" and "Designing Suites For Increased Throughput"? We would love to see you there and have the opportunity to learn about your projects and the challenges you face.

For more information on the RBMA conference in general and our presentations in particular, check out the link under 'News Bite' below.

But you can't attend every conference and seminar, so if you won't be joining us at RBMA, we invite you to check out the flurry of articles that have come out in the last few months on MRI facility design and patient safety. In May, Health Facilities Management published 'Dangerous Attraction'. The September / October issue of patient Safety & Quality Healthcare featured 'MRI Suites: Safety Ourside the Bore'. Advance for Imaging and Oncology Administrators is two-thirds of the way through a three-part series on radiology design having published ''Multi-' Tasking' in July and 'Suite Solutions' in September. The third feature for Advance will appear in their November issue and will focus on aesthetics and positive patient outcomes. If you don't subscribe, you will be able to pick up a complimentary copy at RSNA.

As you can tell by the underlined hyperlinks, each of the above-mentioned published articles is available to you online. Just click on the link to be taken to the web page with the feature article.

As always, we hope that you will contact us if you have any questions about anything you read in the newsletter, or if we can be of any assistance to you.

Feature Articles

Awareness, Not Fear.
Compassion, Not Hysteria.
By Robert Junk, AIA, AHRA and Tobias Gilk

We have a colleague who, until recently, was a subscriber to the MRI Newsletter. Unfortunately we had to ‘cut him off’ after he recounted his recent MRI. Nobody’s medical scan should conclude with a call to the local SWAT team.

It's 300 Gauss,
Do You Know Where Your Vent Is?
By Tobias Gilk

As magnets get stronger and active shielding compresses magnetic fields further, the distance between a gentle tug and a life-and-death tug-of-war is reduced to mere inches. MR staff and patients are often lulled into a false sense of security, thinking that objects are safe in the magnet room because they feel no immediate attraction. However, just a step or two closer and they’ve entered that portion of the magnetic field where the strength increases exponentially and where ferromagnetic objects can become lethal missiles.

Medical Gasses In The MRI Suite.
By Tobias Gilk

For the 20+ years of clinical MRI, this modality has mostly served ambulatory, conscious, and less-acute patients. Historically, the average patient for most facilities walks in, spends 20 – 40 minutes in the scanner, and walks out. But the clinical benefits of MRI have grown well beyond the healthy and ambulatory. We are – more and more – scanning patients who require medical gas services ranging from supplemental oxygen to full ventilation. Unfortunately many MRI facilities, even very new suites, have been built without the forethought to include appropriate medical gas infrastructure.

What if there was basic guidance for when and how to include medical gas service for MRI suites based on clinical and engineering best practices?
