MRI Newsletter
December 2006
From The Editors

Tobias (Toby) Gilk's photoYou know that feeling that develops in the pit of your stomach during the 'clack-clack-clack' of the ascent on a roller coaster... that feeling when you know that the exciting acceleration is just about to hit? That's what we feel right now as 2007 approaches.

Not that 2006 hasn't been quite a ride itself because there has been more published this year on MRI facility planning, operations and safety than in many years previous. Many of this year's articles can be viewed from our website by clicking here.

But later this month we expect to see a JCAHO Sentinel Event Alert on MRI safety which will likely stir a frenzy that will extend into 2007 for JCAHO accredited MRI facilities.

Hopefully by February or March the new version of the ACR White Paper, completely re-written and retitled ACR Guidance Document for Safe MR Practices: 2007, will be available for downloading.

Of course, those of you who receive the MRI Newsletter will be the first to learn all of the critical details of each of these developments.

For those of you who have a paid subscription to the MRI Newsletter, this will be your final full-access version unless you renew your subscription this year.

For those of you who receive the complimentary, limited-access version and are enjoying the December issue's features, we want to make sure that you get to read up-to-date MRI news for the whole next year. Please take this opportunity to subscribe.

If you haven't already received a promotional subscription offer via email (another one will be sent in a week), you can always subscribe online by clicking here.

As always, we hope that you will contact us if you have any questions about anything you read in the newsletter, or if we can be of any assistance to you.

We believe that this is a concrete indicator that MRI facility safety will be growing in importance for JCAHO site surveys in the coming year. Of course, we will notify our readers as soon as the Alert is released and will follow with updated information on changes to site surveys.

The New 10 Questions:
Part 1 of 2
By Robert Junk, AIA, AHRA and Tobias Gilk

It has been a couple of years since we introduced our Ten Questions to Ask Your MRI Architect. In that time, this litmus test of basic technical and operational knowledge of MRI safety issues has been widely used and, unfortunately, abused. To celebrate the success of the Ten Questions and to keep one step ahead of those who would try to fake expertise in the planning and safety issues relevant to MRI safety, we’re proud to introduce a new Ten Questions!

Calculate Your MRI Suite Safety Score.
By Tobias Gilk

A recurring theme of many of our recent presentations has been process management: evaluating and quantifying where you are and determining where you would like to be. This can apply to any number of quality assurance factors for imaging providers, from no-show appointments, to repeat scans, to patient throughput. Today, however, we will help MRI facilities put a score to the safety provisions of their practice to help identify how effective your current safety practices are and, more importantly, identify ways to improve safety for your patients and staff.

MRI Risk Isn't Standing Still:
Are You?

Overall, MRI is treating more patients every year with ever-growing acuity levels but our MRI facilities are frozen testaments to our assessments of needs of years past. So why is it so vitally important to re-evaluate the safety provisions of our MRI facilities?
