Rewritten MR Safety Guidance Document:
The American College of Radiology (ACR) has just issued a complete rewrite of the world's most recognized 'best practices' document on safety in the MRI suite. Formerly titled the White Paper on MR Safety, the new, expanded and re-written document has been made available electronically under the new title of the ACR Guidance Document for Safe MR Practices: 2007.
Prior publications issued in 2002 and 2004 addressed topics including patient screening, staff training, clinical contraindications & concerns and the 4-zone screening and access control principle. The new edition of the Guidance Document expands its applicability to all MR installations, addresses the new ASTM / FDA safety designations, dramatically expands coverage of clinical issues such as pacemakers and NSF, and introduces two new appendices, one on MRI suite safety design and one on emergency preparedness.
As with the two previous iterations of this document, the authoring committee, comprised of MR clinical, technical and design experts, unanimously agreed on all included guidance. Guidance contained within the document does not represent simply the majority opinion of the MR Safety Committee, but rather a solidarity viewpoint of foremost experts in the field today.
