For the last 20 years, MRI facilities and their designers have largely been left to their own devices when developing designs for new or updated suites. Apart from the minimum technical standards provided by the MRI vendor, there has been a profound lack of information for suite design. With increased awareness of safety issues, expanding clinical applications, and new burdensome financial pressures from reduced reimbursement, effective MRI suite s are more crucial than ever. Fortunately, new design guidance publications which will provide suggestions for basic layouts, are soon to be available.

A cardiac patient has a heart attack while getting onto the patient table in a dedicated outpatient facility… what do you do?
Evacuate the patient from the magnet room? Have the techs begin CPR? Call in the on-premises radiologist for emergent medical care? Or call 9-1-1 and stand around and wait, asking if anyone knows how to use the crash cart that has been decorating the patient holding area for the last several years?
