MRI Newsletter
October 2007
From The Editors

Tobias (Toby) Gilk's photoHave you been following our monthly "Forward to a Friend" promotion in which readers have a chance to win a full-access subscription for the 2007 MRI Newsletter? You haven't?!? Well, this is the last time we're giving away that prize. That's right, starting with those who forward this issue of the MRI Newsletter using the feature at the foot of this email, we're now going to give away full access subscriptions for all of 2008 every month! Ok, It's not quite up to the level of the MRI that Siemens is giving away. Hey, this is better. They're only giving away an MRI, we're giving away 12 issues of the MRI Newsletter (that's twice the words, twelve months in a row).

September's winner is Della Johnson of Georgia, USA. Della forwarded along the MRI Newsletter and was picked to win a free full-access subscription for the rest of 2007. You can win a full access subscription too. Just use the forward feature at the foot of this email to be automatically entered. Look at the 'Share The News' section below for all the details.

This month, Robert and I presented at the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) annual meeting and were so pleased with the response of the risk managers interested in MRI safety.

We were honored to have the support of a number of sponsors who made our presentation possible. Our main sponsor for our presentation was Kopp Development.

Additional support for our presentation to ASHRM's annual meeting was provided by ETS Lindgren, Covidien, and Mednovus.

And immediately after the ASHRM conference, I jetted off to the SMRT Syracuse Regional conference where I presented on MRI suite design to a crowd of Empire State technologists. Thanks to ETS Lindgren and Everbrite Technologies for making this presentation possible.

As always, please contact us if you have questions about anything you read in the newsletter, or if we can be of any assistance to you.

MRI Patient Throughput Calculator
By Robert Junk, AIA, AHRA and Tobias Gilk

In the wake of declining reimbursements for MRI there has been a growing interest in patient throughput. Long the ‘cash cow’ of radiology, increased competition and reduced per capita revenue have begun driving those providers with marginal business plans out of the market.  Many providers have been motivated to take a long look at how their business practices could be improved to respond to the changing market conditions.

With that preamble, we would like to provide you with the following tool that can help you begin to quantify several factors that impact your capacity to scan a greater number of patients...

Civil Liability:
The Elephant In The Room.
By
Tobias Gilk

Few people would argue that healthcare is subject to too few rules. We might debate whether the ones in place are truly the most effective, but when you look at the reams and reams of paper needed to document the rules from CMS, Joint Commission, private payers, state regulations, building codes, professional societies, accrediting bodies and others, it’s clear to see that anyone charged with regulatory compliance has their hands full. What you may not recognize in the shared acts of tree-genocide is that these collected works occasionally leave major holes in their collective coverage.

When these assorted codes and standards omit coverage, particularly on issues of safety, what is the only avenue left to patients and families to redress wrongs?

The Colombini Lawsuit To Go To Trial.
By Tobias Gilk

My RSNA checklist probably looks a lot like other people’s…

  • Try and find a hotel room within 50 miles
  • Book my flight
  • Identify ‘must see’ lectures
  • Arrange to meet colleagues and clients
  • Check the status of the Colombini lawsuit

What? You don’t have that last one on your list?

For all furor that surrounded the 2001 oxygen cylinder MRI fatality in the immediate aftermath, few are aware that, as of about a month ago, the $10 million lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial immediately prior to RSNA. While in Chicago, our daily news may be punctuated with multi-million dollar liability verdicts...
